The IELTS Reading test evaluates various reading skills including reading for the main ideas, details, inferences, implied meanings, writer’s opinions, attitudes, argument developments, and overall comprehension of written passages across two different formats: Academic and General Training.

Test duration is set at 60 minutes with three sections to read. The Academic Reading test involves three sections each housing extensive texts from different sources including books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Conversely, the General Training Reading Test showcases a range of materials like notices, advertisements, official documents among others presented in a more everyday language context.

Question types in the test are varied encompassing filling gaps in text or tables, matching headings to text or diagrams, completing sentences, multiple-choice questions among others amounting to a total of 40 questions.

Scoring is based on one mark per correct answer and results are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale with scores reported in whole or half bands.
